Now, it's time to start preparing to compete:
- Form a team of 3 – 6 members, decide on your team name and allocate job roles Team members can choose from any relevant roles, including: Team Manager, Manufacturing Engineer, Design Engineer, Graphic Designer and Resource Manager.
- Register for the competition season. School Registration normally opens in the summer term and runs until the end of the year, but the sooner you get signed up, the more help we can give you along the way!
- Download the Rules and Regulations for your chosen class. You can find out more about the different classes on our YouTube channel, or by reading our Rules & Regulations documents before making your decision.
- Business and Sponsorship - plan and prepare a business plan, develop a budget and raise sponsorship. Teams are encouraged to collaborate with industry and create business links.
- Download your FREE Autodesk Software packages by registering for a free Autodesk Education account. Once you have registered your school, we recommend downloading Fusion 360 and CFD.
- Register with Fabrio to gain access their suite of F1 in Schools tutorials for Autodesk Fusion 360. Fabrio Tutorials are by far the most effective and approachable way to learn the software, whether you are a teacher, student, parent or team mentor.
Then the process can begin:
- Design - using 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software, design an F1 car of the future to the specifications set by the International Rules Committee just like in Formula 1.
- Analyse - aerodynamics are analysed for drag coefficiency in a virtual wind tunnel using Computational Fluid Dynamics Software (CFD).
- Make - using 3D CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) software, the team evaluates the most efficient machining strategy to make the car.
- Test - aerodynamics are tested in wind and smoke tunnels.
Now, it's time to start preparing to compete:
- Pit Display - put together an informative display showing your work through all stages of the project. Think about your team identity.
- Scrutineering - cars are submitted to Parc Ferme where the judges scrutinize every dimension to check they comply with the Rules and Regulations.
- Engineering Judging - judges question teams on how their cars has been manufactured and why particular designs were chosen.
- Verbal Presentation - you'll present a rehearsed presentation to a panel of judges covering all aspects of the challenge, within a set time limit.
- Portfolio Judging - you'll create a detailed portfolio focussing on the Design and Engineering or your car, along with your Enterprise activities.
- Race - the moment of truth. Experience the thrill of watching your car powering down the F1 in Schools racetrack at speeds of up to 75kph.
