The Falcons fly to victory in Manchester

The efforts of the Falcons team from Richard Rose Central Academy in Carlisle were rewarded with victory at the North West Regional Finals held at Manchester University on Tuesday. The Falcons team were crowned overall winners of the regional event, whilst their sister team Shooting Starz won the 11-14 age category. Both teams have earned their place to race in the UK National Finals to be held at Autosport International Show in January next year.
The third team through to the National Finals in January were the Red Kites team from Little Lever Specialist Language College in Bolton, who were rewarded with victory in the Best Rookie category. Also from the Bolton area, were the Flaming Tyres team, from Westhoughton High School who took home the Sponsorship and Marketing Award.
Richard Rose Central Academy won a total of four awards at the event, having success with their team the Diamond Girls, who won the 14-16 age category, whilst the Overall Winners, the Falcons, also won the race to be fastest R-Type car of the day, by securing the quickest time of 1.127 seconds.
Two teams from Lytham St Annes School in Preston took home awards at the event, with GENR8 taking home the award for Best Engineered car, and Team Scorpion taking home the Best Team Identity award.
The Caldew Lea Comets from Caldew Lea Primary raced their way to the top, by beating older students to the chequered flag with their car. Their D-type car was the fastest of the day, with a time of 1.126 seconds. The team also took home the title of Primary School winners.
The North West event was the third of the 2008/09 season, as the F1 in Schools regional finals travel around the UK, taking in ten different venues with several hundred school teams taking part. The winning teams will then compete for national glory in January at the National Finals to be held on the 10/11th January at the Autosport International Show, NEC, Birmingham. The new National Champions will then represent the UK at the World Championships, which have previously been held alongside Formula One Grand Prix events, with last year’s finals being held in Kuala Lumpur during the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix weekend.
