St Bedes School wins five awards in Newcastle

St Bede’s Catholic Comprehensive School in Peterlee took a dominating victory at the North East England Regional Finals held today at The Discovery Museum in Newcastle. The School scooped five awards including the Overall Winners crown at the regional event with their two teams St Bede’s Babes and Team Carbon. The St Bede’s Babes team have now earned their place to race in the UK National Finals to be held at Autosport International Show in January next year.

The aspiring F1 engineers, created a miniature Formula One car, which they raced along a 20 metre track against competitors from across the region. The St Bede’s Babes team won the 14-19 Age Group category, the award for the Best Engineered Car and the Overall Winners title at the event. The team for the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge consisted of Hayley Clarke, Megan Crombie, Caitlan Quinney and Yasmin Tomlinson.

Their sister team, Team Carbon took home the Best Sponsorship and Marketing award, whilst also winning the race to have the fastest car of the day. A time of 1.157 seconds secured the team victory in the race to be fastest D-type team. Team Carbon consisted of Luke Stephenson, Adam Brown, Richard Dring, Hannah Fahey and Hayley Honnor.

Also winning trough to the National Finals are Leoneons F1 from St Leonards School in Northend, after securing victory in the 11-14 Age Group category, the team for the event consisted of, Aidan Hodgson, Grant Cook, Adele Eliot, Jack Mullaney, Ciaran Parkin, and Sophie Yorston.

The final team through to the National Finals are Team Rapido, from Spennymoor School, who scooped the award for Best Rookie Team. Team Rapido included, James Thompson, Bethany Blatchford, Daniel Courtley, James Foreman, Ryan Gamsby and Daniel Hardy.

The Innovative Thinking Award went to Team Stilleto from Framwell Gate School, whose inspirational car design secured victory. Their team included, Louisa Oliver, Katie Blackett, Naomi Emerson, Amy Harris, and Melissa Hodgson.

The Newcastle event also starred several Primary School teams, the Storm Racers team from Mortimer Primary, South Shields won the award for Overall Primary School Winners. The Storm Racers consisted of, Naomi Dover, Chloe Ingamells, Megan Lowrie, Grace Pike and Lucy-Anne Searcey.                   

The North East England event was the seventh of the 2008/09 season, as the F1 in Schools regional finals travel around the UK, taking in ten different venues with several hundred school teams taking part. The winning teams will then compete for national glory in January at the National Finals to be held on the 10/11^th January at the Autosport International Show, NEC, Birmingham
