Rookie school wins Fastest F1 Class award
The Yorkshire and Humberside regional final of the 2011 F1 in Schools Formula One Technology Challenge held at Tata Steel in Scunthorpe produced plenty of exciting racing and three worthy National Finalists. All girls team, ‘Hughes’ Honeyz’, from Winterton Comprehensive School, Scunthorpe, winners in the Formula 1 class; ‘Chemical X’, from Castleford High School, Wakefield, winners of the Bloodhound car class and ‘Newlands’, another all-girl team of students from Newland School for Girls, Hull won the Rookie class.
‘Newlands’ were also the surprise winners in the Fastest F1 Class award, an excellent achievement for an F1 in Schools rookie team. Hughes’ Honeyz won a second award,
collecting the Best Engineered Car award and Chemical X from Castleford High School were also two award winners, taking the Fastest Bloodhound car award after racing down the special F1 in Schools track in the quickest time. A second group of students from Castleford High School, ‘Mean Green Racing Team’, were presented with an award for Perseverance in the face of adversity.
In the Primary F1 in Schools class, Maltspeeders from Lindley Junior School took the top honours and also beat the older and more experienced teams to collect the Best Team Identity award. The Innovative Thinking award was won by Bradford Cobras from Bradford School and Best Sponsorship and Marketing was awarded to Bullet 2.0 from Baysgarth School.
The UK National Finals will be held at the Big Bang Science Fair, Excel, London from 11th – 12th March. Victory at this event will earn the winning team a place in the 2011 F1 in School World Finals, a prestigious event in its own right, which brings with it the chance to compete for City University London engineering scholarships and the unique Bernie Ecclestone F1 in Schools World Champions trophy.
The Yorkshire and Humberside regional finals took place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters. Amongst these are the IET, Tata, Denford, Jaguar, City University, London, SEMTA and KHP Consulting.
