North East has its National Finalists

Strong North East contingent win through to National Finals
’Carbon Fibrez’, a team of students from St.Bedes Catholic Comprehensive School, Peterlee celebrated victory at the North East regional final of the 2011 F1 in Schools Formula One Technology Challenge held recently in Newcastle. The students took overall victory in the Formula 1 class and won the team a place at the UK National Finals of F1 in Schools, while a sister team from St Bedes School, ‘Dynamite Speeders’ won the Innovative Thinking Award.
Joining Carbon Fibrez at the National Finals will be GS velocity from George Stephenson School, Newcastle and Fenomonal Iron from Emmanuel College, Gateshead.
Three teams from Hermitage School, Chester Le Street, entered the challenge and each won an award, with Black Hawks’, taking the Best Engineered Car award, ‘Cosmic Racers’ winning the Best Sponsorship and Marketing award and ‘Flash F1’ collecting the Team Identity award.
‘Inspiration’ from Byron Sixth Form College were the quickest team at the finals with their F1 car recording a time of 1.031 seconds. ‘The Blazing Hares’, a team from Durham Johnston School, raced their scale model Bloodhound car to the Fastest Bloodhound car award with a time of 0.592 seconds, with a second team from the school, ‘Sinclair Racers’, taking the Perseverance in the Face of Adversity award.
The UK National Finals will be held at the Big Bang Science Fair, Excel, London from 11th – 12th March. Victory at this event will earn the winning team a place in the 2011 F1 in School World Finals, a prestigious event in its own right, which brings with it the chance to compete for City University London engineering scholarships and the unique Bernie Ecclestone F1 in Schools World Champions trophy.
The North East regional finals took place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters. Amongst these are the IET, Tata, Denford, Jaguar, City University, London, SEMTA and KHP Consulting.
