SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT TO HOST 2012 F1 IN SCHOOLS UK CHAMPIONS AT FORMULA 1 SANTANDER BRITISH GRAND PRIX
The 2012 F1 in Schools UK Champions will receive an unforgettable prize courtesy of Silverstone Circuit, home of the Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix. The victorious student team will be presented with tickets to one of the top events in the UK sporting calendar and will be able to watch all the action trackside on July 8th next year.
The winners in each of the 2012 F1 in Schools UK National Finals categories - F1 Class, Bloodhound Class and Rookie Class winners, will be at this prestigious occasion at the world-famous Silverstone circuit. They will have competed at intense regional finals at venues around the UK before reaching the National Finals which will be held at the Big Bang Science Fair at the NEC in Birmingham in March. After two days of exciting competition and scrutiny of an expert judging panel, the winners will be crowned at the end of the event and will be able to look forward to July to enjoy the fruits of their success cheering on the British drivers at Silverstone.
Formula 1 is the inspiration behind F1 in Schools, the Formula One-based competition which challenges students to design, build, test and race a scale-model Formula 1 car, forming a team and using many of the processes and skills employed by the personnel within the Formula 1 teams competing in the Championship. The students create a team uniform and identity, develop marketing campaigns and car livery designs as well as engineering their race car from a small block of balsa wood. Just as in the real world of Formula 1 there are strict rules and regulations, while the research and development employed by the students mirrors those used in their F1 factories including wind tunnel testing, 3D cam modelling and CFD aerodynamics analysis.
Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman, F1 in Schools, is grateful to Silverstone Circuits for supporting the programme, saying, “Visiting the Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix is the best prize that the winning F1 in Schools teams could have. They will have spent many months, and in some cases, years, perfecting their race cars for the F1 in Schools competition, so seeing the real F1 cars racing will undoubtedly be a highlight for them. Silverstone has generously donated prizes for the last few years and we are very pleased that they are continuing to support us, as I know from previous years' winners that they have one of the best experiences of their lives at the Grand Prix.”
Silverstone Circuit has also linked with F1 in Schools to provide Regional Finalists with an exclusive ticket opportunity with the F1 in Schools Minibus offer, giving students and teachers or parents an advantageous discounted group rate for Practice and Qualifying days of the Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix.
