Dynamic set for return to National Finals
Reigning UK F1 in Schools champions, 'Dynamic', a team of students from St John Payne School, Chelmsford, celebrated victory at the London and South East Regional Finals of the 2011 F1 in Schools Formula One Technology Challenge held recently at City University, London. The students took overall victory in the F1 class for a second year in succession, winning the team a place at the UK National Finals of F1 in Schools, as well as posting the fastest time with their scale model car to win the Fastest F1 Car award.
'Blur', from Robert May's School, Odiham won the Bloodhound class, to join Dynamic at the UK National Finals, as well as collecting the Best Sponsorship and Marketing Award. A sister team from the school, Zero Gravity, won the Best Team Identity award.
'Regis Racing', a team of students from Regis School, Bognor Regis, entering the challenge for the first time, took victory in the Rookie class and sealed themselves a place at the National Finals.
Best Engineered car was won by Speeding Snails from Wilmington Grammar School, Kent, a team which has previously reached the National Finals. A second team from the school, Full Throttle collected the Innovative Thinking Award. The Fastest Bloodhound car award was presented to Team Phoenix from Kingshott School, Hitchin and teh Perseverance in the face of adversity award was given to QE Tron from Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School.
The UK National Finals will be held this year at the Big Bang Science Fair, Excel, London from 11th – 12th March. Victory at this event will earn the winning team a place in the 2011 F1 in School World Finals, a prestigious event in its own right, which brings with it the chance to compete for City University London engineering scholarships and the unique Bernie Ecclestone F1 in Schools World Champions trophy. Dynamic represented their country at the 2010 event in Singapore, competing against teams from 19 countries, and after a highly competitive week of activity, they won the Best Verbal Presentation award, with the USA team taking the World Champions trophy.
The London and South East regional finals took place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters. Amongst these are the IET, Tata, Denford, Jaguar, City University London, SEMTA and KHP Consulting.
