The pressure is mounting for school students up and down the country as they prepare for the F1 in Schools™ UK 2012-13 competition season with a series of regional finals determining the grid line-up for the F1 in Schools UK National Final which will be held at The Big Bang Science and Engineering Fair, ExCel, London, on 15 – 16th March this year.

A place on the grid at the F1 in Schools World Finals 2013 to be held in Austin, Texas alongside the 2013 FORMULA 1 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX is at stake in this prestigious competition, the largest and most successful global educational initiative.

The F1 in Schools UK Champions and runners up will also receive tickets to the 2013 FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX at Silverstone.  The National Champions will win a Red Bull Racing F1 team factory tour and a TW STEEL Watch for each team member.

F1 in Schools challenges students to create their own Formula One team which is commissioned to design, construct and race the fastest miniature Formula One Car of the Future; a 21cm long scale model built from a block of balsa wood and powered by a compressed air cylinder. Each team of between three and six students will create a 'pit' display at the Regional Final and showcase their work in developing their race car, with a verbal and written presentation for the judges. The teams will then race their model car on a specially designed 20 metre test track, with the cars covering the distance in just over one second.

The winning Regional Finalists will travel to London in March to compete for the title F1 in Schools UK National Champions with the winners heading to Austin, Texas later this year, with teams from around the globe racing for the prestigious Bernie Ecclestone World Champions trophy and coveted automotive and motorsport engineering scholarships to City University London.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman, F1 in Schools, says of the upcoming finals, “Every year since we introduced F1 in Schools back in 2000, it has grown in popularity with more schools and teams competing. Now, over a decade later, it has established itself as an initiative which integrates classroom learning across the key Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects with a practical challenge which inspires and excites the students”.

“F1 in Schools engages with students through the universal popularity and magnetic appeal of Formula One and we're very proud of our success in providing a foundation for career choice in all the areas covered by the challenge from business management to marketing, design to engineering. Our students have earned work placements and careers in prestigious companies within engineering, motorsport and Formula One, demonstrating the value of taking on the challenge presented by F1 in Schools. I'm sure that our National Finals this year will once again uncover young talents with great futures ahead.”

New to the competition this year the National Champions' school will be presented with a Denford 3 Axis CNC Router a prize worth over £10,000.  Simon Moorhouse, Managing Director of Denford Ltd, said “We are delighted to extend our support for F1 in Schools by offering this valuable prize to the 2013 UK National Champions. I am sure it will be a welcome addition to the school's D&T department and will provide students with a manufacturing resource which will be well used within the curriculum.  In addition, it will offer the winning team the best opportunity to prepare for the next stage of the competition, as they gear up to represent the UK at the 2013 F1 in Schools World Finals in Austin, Texas”.

The Challenge, in its thirteenth year, was introduced to the UK in 2000 and since this time has expanded to over 40 countries, reaching over 20 million students taking part around the globe.
