The girls from Team Nero, a team of students from Regent House Grammar School, Newtownards, won the FIA Women in Motorsport Award at the 2014 F1 in Schools UK National Finals. The team were also nominated for the Sponsorship and Marketing Award, but the most exciting news of the weekend for the team was an invitation to represent Northern Ireland at the 2014 F1 in Schools World Finals to be held at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi in November this year.
Team Nero, a team of 17 year olds with team members Jessica Brush, Sophie Burch, Adam Chambers, Maeve Hanna and Cade McCullough,as the highest placed Northern Ireland team were delighted to secure a place at the World Finals and are looking forward to a trip to Abu Dhabi.
Maeve said after the announcement, “This has been a complete life experience. We're speechless to have come so far and done so well in so little time. We've enjoyed everything about the competition; just taking part has been amazing”.
Northern Ireland was also in the Awards line-up with success for Gary Carleton, the teacher supporting Ignition, a team from Cookstown High School. Gary was given the Teacher of the Year Award with the judges being impressed with his passion for the programme and his integration of F1 in Schools in the curriculum and use of it as a resource tool.
