The F1 in Schools STEM Challenge UK National Finals 2017 will be ready for ‘lights out and go, go, go’ at Silverstone next week with student teams from around the UK competing for the top honours and a place at the 2017 World Finals.

The UK Champions of the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge 2017 will be presented with the impressive National Champions trophy. The team will visit the 2017 FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX courtesy of Silverstone and two members of the team also win £5000 per year bursaries for the duration of a Mechanical Engineering degree course at UCL Mechanical Engineering, University College London.  The lucky winners will also have the chance to visit a Formula 1 team factory.

Denford, the founding sponsor and Premier supporter of this prestigious education initiative will present the school of the F1 in Schools UK Champions 2017 with a Denford MRC 40 machine, for routing, milling and engraving, worth £10,000.

With a speed of around 80 kph on a 20 metre F1 in Schools track, the miniature Formula 1 cars designed and built by talented students are put to the test in an exciting competition that tests a range of skills. Not only do the students have to design, build and test a fast car, they also need to demonstrate their engineering understanding with a verbal presentation to a judging panel of industry experts, present their work with a pit display and portfolio and have their model car scrutineered to meet with strict rules and regulations.  All of the various judging elements help to develop a wide range of life skills for the competing students.

After 11 Regional Finals events, the cream of young engineering, creative and entrepreneurial talents will be on the grid at the UK Final being held in the iconic Wing at the home of British Motorsport, Silverstone race circuit. The 20 metres long F1 in Schools race track will dominate Hall 4 in the Wing, with the National Finals teams racing their miniature Formula 1 cars along the track in the blink of an eye. Surrounding the track will be the ‘pit’ of each of the teams, with displays of the work put into the design and manufacture of the scale-model race cars.

At the end of the first competition day the students will be treated to an exclusive Silverstone track tour with their school minibuses sampling the asphalt of the famed Grand Prix circuit. Leading the convoy will be former Top Gear STIG, Ben Collins, in a Ferrari 488 GTB supercar.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools, looks ahead to the 2017 National Finals saying, “All our National Finals teams have worked incredibly hard to reach Silverstone and with such high stakes – university bursaries, a trip to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix and a place at the World Finals– we can expect very tough competition next week. We know the Challenge ignites a passion for engineering, for business and for Formula 1, with the students really putting their classroom learning, and more, into producing outstanding work. I can’t wait to find out who tops the leaderboard this year.”

The F1 in Schools STEM Challenge National Finals 2017 take place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters. Amongst these are the IET, Autodesk, Denford Ltd, City, University of London, UCL Mechanical Engineering, University College London (UCL Mech Eng), Silverstone Circuit, Williams Racing, McLaren and Ferrari North Europe.

Ends.
