media/page_content/North wales winners.jpgYsgol Botwnnog from Gwynedd took victory with their team 'Gwib' at the North Wales Regional Finals held today at Bangor University. The School scooped the 14-19 Age Group title as well as the Overall Winners crown at the regional event and have now earned their place to race in the UK National Finals to be held at Autosport International Show in January next year.

 

The aspiring F1 engineers, created a miniature Formula One car, which they raced along a 20 metre track against competitors from across the region. The Gwib team for the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge consisted of Llyr Hughes, Arwel Evans, Thomas Evans, Mari Roberts, Sian Roberts and Dafydd Sion Williams.

 

Also joining Gwib at the National Finals are Pelydr-x from Morgan Llwyd School in Wrexham, they won the 11-14 Age Group category. The team for the event consisted of, Thomas Cliffe, Deiniol Davis, Haf Edwards, Tesni Jones and Danny Rich. The final team through to the National Finals are Team Hippo, from Eiria High School in Colwyn Bay, after they scooped the award for Best Rookie Team. Team Hippo included, Elliot Heap, Jack Osbourne and Matthew Walker.

 

Welshpool High School was the quickest School on track and won both the D-Type and R-Type categories with their teams. Fire Flash secured a time of 1.187 seconds down the 20 metre track with their D-type car, their team consisted of Robert Holz Leyton Heddoe, Harry Gries, Daniel Pugh, Jack Taylor and Edward Tuffin. Whilst Quantum Velocity set a fastest time of 1.192 seconds with their R-Type car, the team for the event included Tom Davies, Adam Ellis, Alex Grimshaw, James Mead, Jack Williams and Tom Williams.

 

The Sponsorship and Marketing award went to Fast Forward from Holywell High School, Flintshire their team included, Katie Eyton, Joseph Matthews, Natalie Papper, Shaun Birch, Shaun Jones and Leanne Lefley. Team Glucose from Ysgol Friars won the Best Team Identity award. The team from Gwynedd included Mathieu Rees, Joshua Bartholomew, Essa Hijazi, Ussama Mohyuddin, Lowri Thomas and Charlotte Williams.                                                   

 

The final awards went to Osprey F1 team from Connahs Quay High School in Flintshire, they won the Best Engineered Car Award, as well as their 14-16 age group category. The team for the challenge included James Hulley, Tom Craven, Shaun Hadley, Tom Hines, and Matthew Thomas

 

The North Wales event was the eighth Regional Final of the 2008/09 season, as the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge travels around the UK, visiting ten different venues. The winning teams will then compete for national glory in January at the National Finals to be held on the 10/11th January at the Autosport International Show, NEC, Birmingham. The new National Champions will then represent the UK at the World Championships, which have previously been held alongside Formula One Grand Prix events, with last year's finals being held in Kuala Lumpur during the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix weekend.
